Craig Kieswetter has warned Matt Prior he faces a fight to hang on to his gloves, declaring it is his ambition to become England's first-choice wicketkeeper "in all forms of the game". Kieswetter showcased his ability at last year's World Twenty20 in the West Indies, most notably smashing a match-winning 63 off 49 balls in a seven-wicket defeat of Australia in the final, but has since fallen out of contention for national honours.
"In that World Twenty20 side most of us were probably in the best form of our careers, certainly I was," he told The Guardian. "In the final we just said, 'We might as well try and win this properly.' They [Australia] had four quicks so there was nowhere to hide. KP [Kevin Pietersen] and I thought, 'We might as well have a crack.' We were a bit lucky. But we played some rather good shots too."
Four months on from his swashbuckling efforts, Kieswetter found himself being dropped following a slump in form. And, although he backed the decision, he admits returning to county cricket with his tail between his legs was a hard pill to swallow.
"It was really disappointing," he said. "I was part of the side that won a World Cup. But realistically, when I look at the way I played back in England against Australia and Bangladesh, it was a warranted decision.

Youngsters lead Surrey win over Essex

Surrey 154 for 7 beat Essex 111 by 43 runs
Surrey beat Essex by 43 runs in the Friends Life t20 match at The Oval to record only their second win in 12 Twenty20 matches between the two sides.
Tom Maynard's innings of 45 and some late hitting from Twenty20 debutant Zafar Ansari (30 not out) led the Lions to 154 for 7 batting first, despite Graham Napier taking two early wickets.
That total was to prove too much for the Eagles, who were dismissed for 111 with two-and-a-half overs unused.

Vincent Barnes has turned down an offer to coach Bangladesh but has been asked to reconsider his decision by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Barnes' contract as South Africa's assistant coach will be terminated at the end of June and he is not part of the revamped national set-up under newly-appointed coach Gary Kirsten.
"I did turn it [Bangladesh job] down, but I have been asked to reconsider," Barnes told ESPNcricinfo.
At a press conference in Johannesburg, Cricket South Africa named Russell Domingo, who coached the Warriors, as assistant to Kirsten, and Allan Donald as the bowling coach. Barnes was offered a role at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria. Gerald Majola, the CSA chief executive, said they were waiting for a response from Barnes.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has reportedly zeroed in on South Africa's assistant coach, Vincent Barnes, as a candidate to coach the national team following the departure of Australian Jamie Siddons after a disappointing World Cup campaign. Stuart Law, the interim coach of Sri Lanka, is also in the running but there are reports of his chances failing due to a disagreement over conditions with the BCB.
"We are still in negotiations with Stuart Law. We are interested in him but we have given him some conditions," BCB president Mustafa Kamal told Daily Star. "If he accepts those, we'll go for him. It means our talks with him are not over.
"If it doesn't go through with Law, we will take a final decision on Barnes. If we take him, it is nothing to be worried about because we'll take a specialist coach for batting and bowling."

A lengthy rehabilitation awaits Bangladesh fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza as he underwent surgery on his knee after injuring it during a domestic game in December last year and missing the World Cup. Mortaza was successfully operated upon by Australian orthopaedic surgeon Dr David Young in Melbourne earlier this month but might not be able to bowl before October.
"I'm now fine. Dr Young checked me this morning and he was really happy with the improvement and what he told me is that he will be surprised if I miss the Pakistan series in December this year," Mortaza told the Daily Star.
Mortaza said that at the moment, there was no swelling on his operated knee and he could walk with the support of a crutch. His rehabilitation programme will commence soon. "It is too early to say anything about when I will get back my full fitness as only two weeks have gone after the operation but right at this moment I am feeling good.
"Generally it needs four weeks from the operation to start the rehabilitation. If everything goes well, it will be possible to start bowling from October, so I'm hopeful that I can gain full fitness before the Pakistan series."
Dr Debashish Chowdhury, the Bangladesh Cricket Board physician, said that the decision on when to start the rehabilitation program will be taken only after a detailed assessment of the case papers.

Naeem helps Rajshahi hang on for draw

Dhaka division 280 (Mahmudullah 57, Reza 3-41) and 330 (Haque 118, Mehrab 116, Sajib 5-109) drew with Rajshahi division 314 (Naeem 112, Shahadat 5-82) and 240 for 6 (Junaid 86, Naeem 52*)
Scorecard
Rajshahi survived a couple of tricky situations to hold on for a draw against Dhaka in Mirpur, and win the National Cricket League final on first-innings lead. Rajshahi never showed any real intention of going after the 246 runs they needed to win on the fifth day, knowing a draw would be enough to give them the title. Their batsmen were in control for the majority of the day but there were two phases of play in which quick wickets fell. Naeem Islam, who scored a century in the first innings, held firm and Rajshahi finished on 240 for 6.

Tri-series returns to Australia

India's visit to Australia in 2011-12 has ushered in the return of the limited overs tri-series and the reinstatement of the Australia Day Test match at Adelaide Oval.
The summer from which Cricket Australia makes the lion's share of its total income, via the sale of television rights for India matches, features two Tests against New Zealand in December, and four against the Indian tourists, starting on Boxing Day at the MCG.
Sydney, Perth and Adelaide will round out the Test summer, before Sri Lanka arrive to be the third team in the revived triangular tournament.

Minister pans selectors over Katich

Simon Katich's contentious removal from the 25-man list of Cricket Australia contracts has moved the federal defence minister, Stephen Smith, to make his own unbridled attack on the national selectors.
Unlike on the subcontinent where the crossover between the sporting and legislative realms is frequent and often fevered, Australian cricket and politics seldom collide.
But Smith had no hesitation in making his feelings known when questioned about the decision on the Insiders program on Australian television.
Like Katich a West Australian by birth, Smith said the decision ranked with any of the poorest calls made by selectors in Australian cricket history.
"Well historically of course there have been a series of atrocities committed by the Australian Cricket Board or Cricket Australia or the Australian selectors against Western Australian cricketers but this one is extraordinary. This one is very high at the top of the list," Smith said.
"I mean this is a bloke who over the last 30 Tests he's played has got nearly 3,000 runs, an average of 50 and done better than Ponting and Mike Hussey.
"So it's an extraordinary decision. And regrettably whilst it's always easy to take a shot at selectors I think it says a lot more about the selectors than it does about Simon Katich and I think frankly it has sent very much a message which has undermined confidence in the selectors that they're really up to the task in terms of managing a transition to the next generation of Australian cricketers.

Australia to play three Tests, five ODIs in Sri Lanka

Itinerary of Australia's tour of Sri Lanka

  • August 6: 1st T20, Pallekele
  • August 8: 2nd T20, Pallekele
  • August 10: First ODI, Pallekele
  • August 14: 2nd ODI, Hambantota
  • August 16: 3rd ODI, Hambantota

  • August 31-September 4: 1st Test, Galle
  • September 8-12: 2nd Test, Pallekele
  • September 16-20: 3rd Test, Colombo

Australia will play three Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals when they tour Sri Lanka in August and September this year, the Sri Lanka board has announced.
While the established centres at Galle and the Sinhalese Sports Club, Colombo, are set to host a Test each, Pallekele - situated just outside Kandy - has been awarded the second Test. Pallekele International Stadium, situated which was constructed in the build up to the World Cup, has hosted just one Test previously, when Sri Lanka took on West Indies in December 2010, but that game was badly affected by rain and ended without a single innings being completed.

Smith, Poulton ease Australia to win

Australia Women 182 for 4 (Poulton 54, Nitschke 48) beat New Zealand Women 181 (Mackay 36, Smith 4-32) by six wickets
Scorecard
Australia Women eased to a six-wicket win over New Zealand Women with 18.3 overs to spare in the second encounter of the reconvened Rose Bowl series in Brisbane. The eight-match limited-overs series, which was called off mid-way following the Christchurch earthquake in February, now stands at 3-2 in favour of Australia. With just one game left to play New Zealand can, at most, draw the series, meaning Australia - who currently hold the trophy - have retained the Rose Bowl title.
